Career Slam for Cara after Mixed doubles win in Melbourne

Cara and her partner Leander Paes won today their second title in mixed doubles together, out of 6 tournaments and 4 finals. In the final in Melbourne Park, they defeated the unexpected finalists Ekaterina Makarova and Yaroslav Levinsky 7-5 / 6-3. This title is Cara's first in mixed doubles in Australia and it completes a career slam after the French Open won in 2002 with her brother Wayne, Wimbledon in 2004 still with Wayne and the US Open in 2008 with Leander.

Next tournament for Cara and Liezel next week in Paris to defend their title. In the meantime, Liezel will play Fed Cup in Lievin (near Lille) against France.

Cara and Liezel runners up / Cara and Leander in the final

They fought hard and were the first ones to break to lead 3-1 in the first set, but they lost again unfortunately to the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, 6-4 / 6-3. The match lasted around 1h30 minutes and Cara and Liezel play better than in the first two matches between these teams, but in the end the Williams were the better on court today. Congratulations to them, and still a very good run for Liezel and Cara at this Open. Next tournament together: Paris Indoors in two weeks.

Later today, Cara and her mixed doubles partner Leander Paes qualified for their 4th final together as a team out of 6 (they won at the US Open 2008 and were runners up in Wimbledon 2009 and the US Open 2009). But it took them around 2 hours to get rid of the very good team composed of Lisa Raymond of the USA and Wesley Moodie of South Africa. Indeed, after leading up to 5-2 and serving next in the first set, they finally lost it at the tie break. In the second set, they got broken early twice, and were down 0-3, before starting a great come back in the match. They won the second set in another tie break, after saving a match point, and totally dominated the super tie break, leading up to 9-4 before concluding at 10-7 on an amazing match point that could be the shot of the week at the open!

On Sunday in the final, Cara and Leander will play against the surprising team Ekaterina Makarova and Yaroslav Levinsky, who defeated Flavia Pennetta and Marcelo Melo in a match tie break today. If Cara and Leander won that final, it would be their 2nd victory together, and Cara would complete a career slam in mixed doubles. Match scheduled on Sunday at 4.30pm local time (GMT+11).

Another final for Cara and Liezel!

Today, it took them three sets to get rid of the Russian-Polish pairing Maria Kirilenko and Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-1 / 1-6 / 6-3. It all started perfectly for the Zimbabwean-American team, as they won the first set easily like in all their previous rounds. In the second set, they got broken early, and could never really regroup, as their opponents were playing a very high level of tennis. In the third set, Liezel and Cara broke in the first game, then held, and mostly dominated the whole set, which they concluded on 6-3.

So tomorrow, they will play their third final of the year already, out of three tournaments (after their wins in Auckland and Sydney) and their second Grand Slam final in a row, after the US Open. Their opponents tomorrow are the team that beat them in both the semifinals of Wimbledon and the final of the US Open last year, the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus. The match is scheduled at 3pm local time (GMT+11) on Rod Laver Arena.

Tomorrow will be a long day for Cara, as after the doubles final, she will have to play her mixed doubles semifnal, with her partner Leander Paes, vs Lisa Raymond of the USA and Wesley Moodie of South Africa. Match scheduled 4th from 3pm local time on Margaret Court Arena.

Second title in a row for Black and Huber

One week after their first tournament and first victory of the season, Cara and Liezel did it again in Sydney at the Medibank tournament. This is their 29th tournament as a team, Cara's 53rd and Liezel's 41st.

During this week in New South Wales, they defeated in the first round on Monday the all Russian team Dinara Safina and Maria Kirilenko 6-2 / 6-3 and in the quarterfinals on Wednesday the Australian-Russian pairing Rodionova-Dushevina 6-3 / 4-6 / 10-8.

In the semifinals during Thursday's night session, the American-Zimbabwean pairing was even more convincing, as they defeated the all American team Abigail Spears and Laura Granville 6-1 6-1. The first seeds of the Australian tournament played a very high level of tennis and left no opportunity to their opponents to fully play their game.

Yesterday in the final, the World's best doubles team won over Nadia Petrova of Russia and Tathiana Garbin of Italy 6-1 / 3-6 / 10-3. After a high level first set, the outsider team could come back by being more aggressive, but even after the second set's loss, Liezel and Cara could take the advantage quite easily in the match tie break, to lead it from the beginning and conclude on their first match point.

These two back to back victories in New Zealand and Sydney are the best way for the World's best doubles team to prepare for the Australian Open starting on Tuesday.
