Liezel and Cara into the mixed doubles semis as well

The seeds 1 of the mixed doubles tournament, Cara and her partner Leander won easily today in straight sets 6-3 6-3 against the Japanese-Brazilian team Ai Sugiyama and Andre Sa to qualify for the semifinals. Their opponents there will be Virginia Ruano Pascual and Stephen Huss.

Liezel and her partner Jamie did not even have to play to qualify also for the semifinals, as their Czech opponents Iveta Benesova and Lukas Dlouhy withdrew before the quarterfinals. So in the semis, they will play against Mark Knowles and Anna Lena Groenefeld who against all odds defeated the seeds 2 and defending champions Samantha Stosur and Bob Bryan.

Both matches are scheduled tomorrow, after the ladies doubles semifinals (scheduled on court 1 at 1pm). Cara and Leander play third on the same court, and Liezel and Jamie are scheduled not before 5pm, the court has yet to be chosen depending on the length of the previous matches.

Liezel and Cara against the Williams sisters in the semis

As for the previous rounds, Cara and Liezel had to fight hard to qualify for next round. Being down 4-6 and 1-3, they could rise their level and score the next 11 games, to win it eventually 4-6 / 6-3 / 6-0.

In the next round, the World number one doubles team and winners here in 2005 and 2007 will play against the 4th seed of the tournament, the defending champions, Serena Williams and Venus Williams. This is the first time these two teams, who have won most of the Grand Slam titles over the past three years, will play opposite each other. Full draw here

Today was a tough day for Liezel, who had to play her mixed doubles third round match just after the ladies doubles quarterfinal. And once again, it's been a very tough match against Mike Bryan and Bethanie Mattek, that the American-Scottish team won 7-6 (7) / 4-6 / 6-3.

Interesting fact, this was the 5th time Bethanie and Liezel met on different sides of the net after winning that amazing match in Fed Cup on April 26th, and Liezel won 4 times (in ladies doubles in Madrid and Roland Garros with Cara against Bethanie and Nadia Petrova, and in mixed doubles in Roland Garros with Bob Bryan against Bethanie and Kevin Ullyett and in Wimbledon with Jamie Murray against Bethanie and Mike Bryan, vs 1 defeat in Stuttgart with Cara vs Mattek/Petrova).

So both Liezel and Cara are still in these two tournaments. Tomorrow, Liezel and Jamie will play their quarterfinal match against Dlouhy and Benesova, while Cara and Leander Paes will meet Ai Sugiyama and Andre Sa. And on Friday, they will reunit for their ladies doubles semis against the sisters.

Liezel and Cara into quarterfinals in Wimbledon again

This is the fourth time Cara and Liezel play at the All England Club of Wimbledon together, and for the fourth time, they qualify for the quarterfinals, after winning it in 2005 and 2007, and reaching the semifinals in 2008. But today, the co ranked World number had to fight hard to win their third round match against the Czech duo Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

After a very slow start and the first set easily won 6-2 by the Czechs (with even a 0-4 lead in 15 minutes), the seeds 1 of the British grand Slam could bounce back on their favorite surface and win the second set 6-3. In the third, they could once again break at the most important moment (at 4-3 for them) and despite wasting 2 matchpoints on their opponents serve game, could conclude on their own. Final score 2-6 / 6-3 / 6-4.

In the next round, Liezel and Cara will play against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Nuria Llagostera Vives from Spain. The match will probably be scheduled on Wednesday. Full draw here

Later today, Cara and her partner Leander Paes also qualified for the quarterfinals of the mixed tournament by defeating in a very suspenseful three set match the winners of the Australian Open earlier this year, Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi, 6-2 / 6-7 / 6-3, after being down 1-3 in the third set. Their next opponents on Wednesday will be either Rennae Stubbs and Magnus Lindstedt or Ai Sugiyama and Andre Sa. Full draw here

Both Liezel and Cara qualify for round 3 in mixed doubles as well

After their second round victory in the ladies doubles tournament at the All England club yesterday, Cara and Liezel were expected on the courts today to try to do the same in the Mixed doubles tournament. And they both qualified.

Cara and her partner Leander are into the third round without playing a match, as they were given a bye for first round as the top seeds of the tournament, and as their opponents in the second round Mara Santangelo and Michal Mertinak withdrew before playing today.

For Liezel and Jamie, the qualification to the third round took time and patience. As they won first set in a tie break 7-6 (3), their opponents, the seeds 10 f the draw, Yan Zi of China and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia, fought back and won second set 6-3. In the final set, started after 9pm local time, and despite being broken first, Liezel and local hero Jamie Murray could regroup with the help of the crowd of court 2 and come back in the set? Then they broke again to finish the match on Jamie's serve game. Final score: 7-6 (3) / 3-6 / 6-3

In the next round, Cara and her Indian partner will play against an all Indian team, Sania Mirza and Paes' former doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi, who are the 13th seeds of the tournament and very tough opponents, especially on grass. Liezel and Jamie don't know yet who their next opponents are, as the second round between Bethanie Mattek-Sands/Mike Bryan and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova/Philipp Petschner is yet to be played.

Tomorrow is a day off in Wimbledon, as the middle Sunday is every year. A time for both Liezel and Cara to relax, rest and appreciate their results in both tournaments so far. And then on Monday, they will be back on the courts to fight even harder on the London grass where they have both already enjoyed lots of success in the past years.

Cara/Liezel both in second round in mixed

Today in their first round, Liezel and her partner Jamie Murray from Scotland defeated Raquel Kops Jones of the USA and Rick de Voest of South Africa in a long match that finished as it started to get dark over London. Final score 2-6 / 7-6 / 6-1. Therefore they are now qualified for the second round, in which they will meet seeds 10 Nenad Zimonjic and Zi Yan.

Cara and her partner Leander Paes, first seeded team of the draw will play in the second round against Mara Santangelo of Italy and Michal Mertinak of Slovakia, who went to the third set and 11-9 today to defeat Wesley Moodie and Vladimira Uhlirova. Winners of the French open last month, Paes and his partner in the men's doubles draw Lukas Dlouhy have lost today in the first round against Blake and Fish in three sets, so the mixed doubles title is now the last objective for his fortnight in London. Full mixed doubles draw here

In the Ladies doubles tournament, Cara and Liezel will play their second round tomorrow 4th match from 12pm on showcourt 3, against Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska, the Polish winners of Marbella this year. Their respective mixed doubles second round matches are not on tomorrow's schedule, but will probably be played on Saturday.

Cara/Liezel win their first round match in Wimbledon

Cara and Liezel's opponents today were the team they had defeated a couple of weeks ago in Birmingham for the final, Abigail Spears and Raquel Kops Jones, both of the USA. And today on court 7 of the All England Club, the first seeded team of the tournament won again, and with the exact same scoreline, 6-1 6-4. In the second round, the Zimbabwean-American team will meet another very competitive team, Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska of Poland. Match scheduled on Friday or Saturday. Full draw here

Tomorrow, starts the mixed doubles tournament. After winning the last Slam mixed doubles title with Bob Bryan in Paris, Liezel will team again with her usual partner Jamie Murray from Great Britain. In the first round, they will meet Rick de Voest from South Africa and Raquel Kops Jones of the USA. Cara and her partner, the recent French Open winner in men's doubles with his partner Lukas Dlouhy, Leander Paes, have a bye for the first round as they are the first seeded team of the tournament. In the second round, they will play against the winners of Mertinak/Santangelo and Moodie/Uhlirova. Full draw here

Cara/Liezel lose in the semifinals of Eastbourne

They had started the week in Southern England with two convincing wins in straights sets (6-1 6-2 against Ivanovic and Lisicki in the first round and 6-2 6-2 against Kirilenko and Husarova in the second round). But they failed to qualify for the final after losing to Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs 6-4 7-6 (5).

Cara/Liezel win in Birmingham

In the first round of the Aegon Classic tournament today, they defeated in straight sets and very easily Maria Kirilenko and Sara Errani 6-4 / 6-1. Then in the second round, they defeated Natalie Grandin of South Africa and Melinda Czink of Hungary in a match tie break: 6-4 4-6 10-5. The semifinals were also tough against Sania Mirza and Chia Jung Chuang, with Cara and Liezel being lead in the first set before eventually winning it in straight sets again 7-5 6-3.

In the final, they defeated all American team Abigail Spears and Raquel Kops Jones 6-1 6-4 and could hold the tournament's trophy as they had already done last year.

Cara/Liezel out in the Semifinals but Liezel wins in Mixed

Like last year, Cara and Liezel played their semifinals in the French Open against Virginia Ruano Pascual and Anabel Medina Garrigues on court 1 on the second wednesday. And like last year unfortunately, the Zimbabwean-American duo lost but on a closer score 5-7 / 7-5 / 2-6.

On the other hand, Liezel and her first time partner Bob Bryan won in the mixed doubles. The seeds 1 of the tournament defeated in round 1 Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Kevin Ullyett (7-6 / 6-3), in round 2 Flavia Pennetta and Dusan Vemic (6-3 / 3-6 / 12-10), in the quarterfinals Ai Sugiyama and Andre Sa (1-6 / 6-4 / 12-10) saving 3 match points on the way, in the semifinals Anna Lena Groenefeld and Mark Knowles (6-2 / 6-2) and in the final Vania King and Marcello Melo (5-7 / 7-6 / 10-7).

Congrats to Liezel for her first mixed doubles title. She now has won at least one title in every Grand Slam (with the titles in the ladies doubles with Cara Black in Melbourne in 2007, in Wimbledon in 2005 and 2007 and in New York in 2008).

Cara and Liezel will now focus on the grass court season, with the goal to win their third Wimbledon title together.

Cara and Liezel into the Semifinals in Paris

Today, on court 1, Cara and Liezel were playing for the third time of the year against a very tough team, Nadia Petrova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. In Stuttgart a month ago, the Russian-American team had won in the second round in a match tie break, but in Madrid in the first round, the World number 1 team had had their revenge. In that third encounter, both teams started very well playing very high level tennis. But bit by bit, the Zimbabwean-American pairing could make the best of the match and win it all 6-3 6-3.

Cara and Liezel win first round match in Paris

It took a little over one hour for the top seeds of the Ladies Doubles tournament to get rid of Natalie Grandin of South Africa and Melinda Czink of Hungary in two close sets: 6-4 / 7-6. Very few surprises in the doubles main draw, except the defeats of Mara Santangelo/Nathalie Dechy and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (both teams winners of 3 tournaments this year so far).
