Liezel’s cause
Liezel and Cara won Wimbledon in 2005, and then, 5 days laters, while she was playing at the World Tennis Team, Liezel severely injured her knee. She endured pre-op therapy for 4 weeks and then had surgery.
Liezel was rehabbing at home in Houston, Texas, when she heard the news of Hurricane Katrina and the devastation that it had caused. Touched by the desperation around them, Liezel and Tony immediately tried to find out a way to help the victims. They called their church and discovered it was opened as a shelter and before long were hosting 100-200 people.
Liezel and Tony provided food and clothing, but were determined to do more. While volunteering, they discovered the problems encountered on several levels by the victims of the Hurricane. Indeed, they quickly realized the money allegedly collected for the victims never actually got to them. So there was much to be done.
Liezel and Tony then started to help families move to apartments, and provide them with clothing, furniture, medical, school supplies … anything that would help them get a new start in life.
Liezel emailed everyone she knew asking for help with clothing, furniture or maybe a gift card. The response she received was extremely overwhelming! The donations have been coming in from everywhere. From Liezel’s colleagues and friends in tennis, but also from anyone willing to help in a direct way. Because Liezel’s cause gives 100% of the donation to the victims!
Liezel and Tony and all the victims still need our support, so go on www.liezelscause.com to find out more details on Liezel’s cause, on the adopted familes and to see how you can be part of the cause!
